 The Friends of Lakewood Libraries are hosting a used book sale at the Angelo M. Iacoboni Library on Saturday, March 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Proceeds from all sales directly support Lakewood's two local libraries.
Members-only sales will precede the Saturday event and are for members of Friends of Lakewood Libraries and disabled customers. New members can join FOLL at these events held Thursday, March 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Friday, March 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call the Angelo M.  The Centre's annual Easter Sunday Brunch will take place in the Weingart Ballroom on Easter Sunday, April 4. Guests will enjoy a champagne brunch buffet that includes special food stations for kids.
Kids also have a chance to win treat-filled Easter baskets. Brunch will be served from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The price is $19.95 for adults, and $10.95 for children (ages 5 – 11). Senior citizens will receive a 10% discount for their group. For reservations, call 562-804-4434.

 The Lakewood Mug Run returns to city streets on Saturday, March 13. The fast 10K and 5K course is ideal for recreational runners pushing their personal best or deputies making an official qualifying run.
The 10K/5K run will start at 8:00 a.m. At 9:30 a.m. Lakewood families and kids can enjoy a shorter Family Fun Run. Discounted pre-registration continues through March 4 and is recommended. Information is available at www.lakewoodmugrun.com

 Another Household Hazardous Waste/E-waste Collection Event will be held Saturday, March 27 between 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at nearby Veteran's Stadium in Long Beach. Residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste and e-waste. The entire drop-off process only takes a few minutes. Often, participants don't even have to leave their car.

 Lakewood's Volunteer Day program is looking for sites for its Saturday, April 24 clean-up and fix-up event. Annually, more than 500 volunteers fan out over the community and donate a morning’s work to help their neighbors.
This is Lakewood’s special day to make lives and neighborhoods better with the support of civic and community organizations and Lakewood youth groups.

 The 2010 U.S. Census will have an enormous impact on cities and communities in the coming decade. A “complete count” has local impacts. Communities like Lakewood could lose up to $1,300 for each person who is not counted--each year for 10 years.The Census will help communities receive over $400 billion in federal funding every year for things like schools, job training centers, emergency services, and public works projects. The data collected by the Census also helps determine the number of seats California has in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Census questionnaires are mailed or delivered to households in February and March with April 1 being "Census Day."

 Preparations are getting underway for the “Relay for Life of Lakewood” coming to Artesia High School on May 1 and 2. Email Marta Zepeda or Kathy Farmer for more information about volunteering or starting a team.
A kick-off event for potential teams, sponsors, participants is set for Saturday, January 30 from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. at the Lakewood Center food court. The event will help teams, captains and corporate sponsors get prepared for the Relay for Life.
